Online Privacy or Security…

Since this summer’s NSA scandal and as the NSA continues to make headline news, people have been pondering important questions. Which is more important, online privacy or security? How much is online privacy worth? Is online privacy too much to ask for? Is security worth giving up online privacy for?

According to a study done by Lab42, a market research company, the nation is practically divided down the middle on the importance of online privacy at the risk of security. 54% would prefer to have more online security at the expense of security. 52% says that privacy is a thing of the past, and at no surprise 57% of consumers claim to have less trust in the government because of the NSA leaks. However, despite opinions that online privacy is a “lost cause,” consumers are still taking some steps to protect themselves.

The younger the consumer the more likely they are to participate in online and mobile privacy. 56% of the Millennial generation also known as generation Y (born 1981-2000)      have their mobile devices password protected, compared to only 36% of consumers over the age of 35.
