More than a thousand businesses in the US have been badly affected by the cyber attack that crippled the in-house cash register systems of major US retailers like Target, Supervalu, and UPS.

new advisory released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday afternoon claims that the attacks have done more harm than previously reported. In fact, hackers are now busy pilfering the data stolen from millions of debit and credit cards belonging to American customers. Neither the customers, nor the companies are aware of this.

The malware that attacked these systems has been dubbed as Backoff. Backoff made its debut in October 2013. It can scrape the memory contents of cash registers, a.k.a point of sales (PoS) systems, used at store checkouts, and obtain credit card data. It is capable of monitoring keyboard strokes and communicating with remote servers.

Last year, the Backoff malware impacted numerous businesses in the United States. At least seven vendors of PoS systems have confirmed that many of their clients have been hit by the malware.
